The global fashion industry is vast, vibrant, and deeply influential. But beneath the glamour, it carries a heavy burden. According to the United Nations, the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions—more than international flights and shipping combined. It’s also the second-largest consumer of water worldwide. From synthetic dyes that pollute rivers to mountains of textile waste ending up in landfills, the hard truth is that fast fashion has come at a tremendous cost to our environment and communities.

As fashion lovers and creators, we can’t ignore this reality. And it’s one of the biggest reasons why Red Thread was born.
Why We Chose a Different Path
At Red Thread, we focus on Batik Tjap, a traditional hand-stamped batik that takes months to create. Unlike fast fashion, which pushes for speed and volume, our process embraces slowness and intention. Every piece relies on natural rhythms—even the weather plays a role in the hand-dyeing process. Sunlight, humidity, and rainfall all determine how our colors set. There is no rushing Batik. And perhaps that’s the beauty of it.
We also carefully choose our fabrics. Alongside cotton, we use Lyocell, (you can click here for a complete article on Lyocell) sustainable fiber made from wood pulp that is soft, breathable, and biodegradable. Lyocell requires far less water and energy to produce compared to conventional fabrics, making it a mindful choice for both comfort and the planet.
Our Commitment to Clean Water
Batik is undeniably water-intensive. Every stage—from waxing to dyeing—requires careful washing and rinsing. Rather than adding to the problem, we built a custom water filtration system. This ensures that the water used in our Batik process is cleaned and filtered before returning to streams and rivers. For us, sustainability doesn’t stop at materials—it extends to the land and water that sustain us all.
Fashion With Options, Not Judgments
We know that everyone’s lifestyle and budget are different. Our goal is not to judge consumers but to offer options. When you choose a Red Thread garment, you are choosing a piece made with care, intention, and responsibility. You’re saying yes to an alternative to fast fashion—one that values tradition, artisanship, and the planet.
Conscious fashion isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. And every mindful decision counts.
Looking Ahead
As more people question the impact of what they wear, we believe fashion can shift from being part of the problem to being part of the solution. At Red Thread, we stand for a slower, kinder, and more sustainable future—one piece of Batik at a time.
Because clothes should tell a story, not just of style, but of respect for people and the planet.
