Lyocell, an Eco Friendly Fabric

The world of sustainable fashion is full of exciting innovations, and Lyocell fabric is one of the most promising. Known for its softness, durability, and eco-friendly production, Lyocell has become a favorite among conscious fashion brands and consumers alike.

What is Lyocell Fabric?

Lyocell is a type of rayon, a semi-synthetic fiber made from natural materials. What sets Lyocell apart is its plant-based origin: it’s derived primarily from eucalyptus trees, which require little irrigation and no pesticides. This makes it a far more sustainable option compared to synthetic fabrics like polyester, which are derived from petroleum and release harmful microplastics.

TENCEL™ Lyocell: A Trusted Name

You may have heard of TENCEL™, which is the trademarked version of Lyocell produced by the Austrian company Lenzing. TENCEL™ Lyocell is made from wood pulp sourced from sustainably managed forests.

The production process is what truly makes Lyocell stand out. Unlike traditional rayon, which often relies on harsh chemicals such as sodium hydroxide, Lyocell is manufactured using a closed-loop system. This means the solvents used to dissolve wood pulp are recovered, recycled, and reused—reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact. The result is a fiber that is not only safe for the planet but also for the people who make and wear it.

Benefits of Lyocell Fabric

Lyocell isn’t just sustainable—it’s also loved for its luxurious qualities:

  • Eco-friendly: Made from renewable eucalyptus trees and produced in a closed-loop system.

  • Soft & Comfortable: Smooth texture that feels gentle on the skin, often compared to silk or cotton.

  • Breathable & Moisture-Wicking: Helps regulate body temperature, making it ideal for warm climates.

  • Durable: Stronger than many other types of rayon, so it lasts longer.

  • Hypoallergenic: Less likely to irritate sensitive skin.

  • Biodegradable: Naturally breaks down at the end of its life cycle.

Lyocell vs. Other Fabrics

  • Lyocell vs. Cotton: Both are breathable, but cotton requires far more water and pesticides to grow.

  • Lyocell vs. Polyester: Polyester is cheaper but sheds harmful microplastics, while Lyocell is biodegradable.

  • Lyocell vs. Viscose/Rayon: Traditional viscose uses toxic chemicals, while Lyocell’s closed-loop system makes it safer and greener.

How to Care for Lyocell

Taking care of Lyocell is simple, and with the right care, your garment can last for years:

  • Wash by hand or on a gentle machine cycle with cold water.

  • Use mild, eco-friendly detergents.

  • Avoid high heat—air drying is best.

  • If ironing, use the lowest heat setting or steam gently.

Why We Love Lyocell

At Red Thread Garment, we chose Lyocell alongside cotton for our garments because it aligns with our values: sustainability, comfort, and longevity. It complements our Batik Tjap process beautifully, giving traditional craft a modern, eco-conscious foundation.

By wearing Lyocell, you’re not only choosing a fabric that feels good—you’re making a choice that’s better for the planet.
