Batik is a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique practiced in Indonesia for generations. At Red Thread Garment, we apply this heritage process to modern TENCEL™ Lyocell fabric—combining craftsmanship with breathable, lightweight materials designed for warm climates.
What Is Batik?
Batik is created by applying wax to fabric before dyeing. The wax resists the dye, forming layered patterns once removed. Because the process is done by hand, each batik garment has natural variation in tone and pattern.
Why TENCEL™ Lyocell?
TENCEL™ Lyocell is a plant-based fiber known for its softness, breathability, and fluid drape. When used for batik shirts, it results in garments that are lightweight, comfortable, and well suited for humid and tropical environments.
Batik vs Hand-Dyed (No Wax)
Not all dyed garments are batik. Batik uses wax to control how dye interacts with the fabric, while hand-dyed garments without wax allow the dye to flow freely. Both techniques are done by hand, but they create distinct visual results.
Care & Wear
Due to the handmade batik dye process, slight variation in color and pattern is expected and part of each garment’s character. We recommend gentle washing to preserve color and fabric integrity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is batik suitable for everyday wear?
Yes. When applied to breathable fabrics like TENCEL™ Lyocell, batik shirts are lightweight, comfortable, and ideal for daily wear in warm climates.
How should I care for a batik shirt?
Gentle washing in cold water is recommended. Avoid bleach and harsh detergents to preserve color and fabric quality.
Are all batik shirts identical?
No. Because batik is handmade, each piece will vary slightly in pattern and tone. These variations are part of the process.
